A range of discrete FET solutions provide space-saving PoE ASFETs and MOSFETs

     Nexperia has announced several new MOSFETs to expand its range of discrete switching solutions for a variety of applications across multiple end markets. This release includes a 100V ASFETs for PoE, eFuse and relay replacement with a 60% reduction in DFN2020 package size, and a 40V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs with improved EMC performance.

     PoE switches typically have up to 48 ports, and each port requires two MOSFETs for protection. With up to 96 MOSFETs on a single PCB, the reduction in space occupied by any device is attractive. As a result, the company released a 100V PoE asfet in the 2mm x 2mm DFN2020 package, which takes up 60% less space than the previous version in the LFPAK33 package. A key function of these devices is to protect PoE ports by limiting inrush current while safely managing failure conditions. To deal with this, it triples the SOA of these devices, with only a small increase in RDS. These ASFETs are also suitable for battery management, Wi-Fi hotspots, 5G piccells and CCTV applications, for example, as an alternative to mechanical relays in smart thermostats.

     Emc-related issues caused by MOSFET switches typically occur only later in the product development lifecycle, and resolving these issues can incur additional R&D costs and delay market launch. Typical solutions include adopting a particularly expensive MOSFETs with low RDS(on) (to slow down the switching speed and absorb excessive voltage loops) or installing an external capacitive buffer circuit, but this approach has the disadvantage of increasing the number of components. The company has optimized its 40V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs to provide EMC performance similar to what can be achieved with an external buffering circuit, while also providing greater efficiency. These MOSFETs are suitable for switching converters and motor controllers in a variety of applications and are available in the LFPAK56 package.
