An extended system for migrating to modern synchronization and timing system architectures

     Microchip Technology has announced the new TimeProvider XT Extension System, a fan shelf for use with the Redundant TimeProvider 4100 Master to migrate traditional BITS/SSU devices into a modular and resilient architecture. The system provides operators with a clear path to replace existing SONET/SDH frequency synchronization equipment while adding timing and phase that are critical to 5G networks.

     As an accessory to the company's widely deployed TimeProvider 4100 Master, each TimeProvider XT shelf is configured with two distribution modules and two plug-in modules to provide 40 fully redundant and individually programmable outputs that are synchronised to meet ITU-T G.823's roaming and jitter controls. Operators can connect up to five XT racks to scale up to 200 fully redundant T1/E1/CC communication outputs. All configuration, status monitoring, and alarm reporting is done through the TimeProvider 4100 Master. This new solution enables operators to consolidate critical frequency, timing and phase requirements into a modern platform, saving on maintenance and service costs.

     The solution is compatible with cable packs and output panels for DCD, SSU 2000, TSUG-3800 and TimeHub systems, so there is no need to rewire the network element. This can save network operators a lot of deployment time and resources, while reducing costs.

     The system has a CC input that allows for online CC phase switching, which is usually performed during the maintenance window to ensure maintenance network synchronization. The TimeProvider 4100 master is required to run the latest version of 2.4 firmware. The TimeProvider XT extension is supported by TimePictra management software, a web-based tool for managing and monitoring synchronization architectures.
