Atmel introduces the industry's lowest power consumption and smallest package for a production Bluetooth Smart solution

     Atmel Corporation the global leader in microcontroller (MCU) and touch technology solutions, today announced the introduction of the industry's lowest power consumption and smallest package in the production Bluetooth Smart solution. The device has a receiving current strength of only 4mA at 3.6V and a transmitting current strength of only 3mA, extending battery life by up to one year in some applications.

     The Atmel SmartConnect Bluetooth Smart BTLC1000 solution further breaks through space limitations with the unique 2.2mmX2.1mm wafer-scale chip package (WLCSP), which is significantly smaller than similar solutions on the market. The tiny, low-power solution supports smart wearables such as fitness trackers and medical devices, as well as a wide range of applications such as human machine interface devices (HID), asset trackers and beacons, taking the rapidly growing iot and wearables market to a whole new level in terms of power consumption and size. The new solution supports Beacon and other application standards for major smartphone operating systems.

     The BTLC1000 is an ultra-low-power Bluetooth SMART single-chip (SoC) solution that integrates an Amtel| SMART ARM® Cortex®-M0 MCU and Bluetooth transceiver. The solution can be paired with any Atmel AVR or Atmel | SMART microcontroller as a Bluetooth Low power connection controller. In addition, its built-in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity, coupled with external memory, can be used as a standalone application processor for a variety of applications such as Beacon, mobile and human machine interface devices (HID). In addition, as a producible and fully certified module in FCC ETSI/CE and IC conditioning systems, the BTLC1000 solution significantly speeds up product design and reduces overall time to market.

     Atmel's BTLC1000 solution supports a variety of different battery types, including button batteries, 5 and 7 batteries, and lithium polymer batteries, without the need for external wire power. The BTLC1000 uses an innovative radio and DSP architecture that enables both extremely low power consumption and high performance. It integrates low-power Bluetooth wireless with baseband and ARM® Cortex®-M0 based MCUS, providing an affordable solution for many Bluetooth Smart applications. With virtually no external components required, the BTLC1000 minimizes the overall cost of the system solution.

     To speed up designer development, Atmel offers a complete starter kit to evaluate Atmel BTLC1000 solutions using the Atmel | SMART ultra low power SAM L21Xplained PRO host MCU evaluation board. The BTLC1000 XPRO Extended Evaluation Board can also be ordered separately and can be plugged into any supported Atmel host MCU Xplain evaluation board to easily add Bluetooth smart connectivity.
