Cypress Semiconductor introduces a 256Mb NOR HyperFlash product

     Cypress Semiconductor, Inc. announced the launch of a 256Mb NOR HyperFlash™ product. The 3.0V S26KL256S HyperFlash is the latest flash memory in the industry to support the high-bandwidth, low-pin HyperBus interface. The device is ideal for high-performance applications, such as automotive dashboards, industrial automation, communication systems, and medical devices that require the highest read bandwidth for quick startup, as well as reduced package size and PCB costs through a low-pin interface.

     HyperFlash products operate at a maximum frequency of 166MHz, with 1.8V products achieving up to 333MBps double data rate (DDR) read bandwidth and 3.0V products achieving 200MBps. The 256Mb HyperFlash device is available in a space-saving 48-mm2 24-ball package for high reliability and operates at temperatures ranging from -40ºC to +125ºC. Cypress's HyperFlash memory family is available in two operating voltages, 3.0V and 1.8V, with capacities of 128Mb, 256Mb and 512Mb. Cypress HyperFlash devices provide a seamless migration path from Quad SPI to dual Quad SPI to HyperFlash, allowing system applications to achieve different levels of flash performance depending on the compatible controller. This enables Oems to offer different models of products with the same design.

     Hiro Ino, Senior director of NOR Flash products at Cypress, said: "Instant power-on systems in automotive, industrial and communications applications have become a trend, and we are seeing increased interest from chipset manufacturers in high-bandwidth, low-pin HyperBus interfaces, as well as increased customer demand for our HyperFlash and HyperRAM™ memories in these areas. Our new 3.0V, 256Mb HyperFlash device is just one part of our plan, and we will also offer different voltage and capacity products to meet this demand."

     The HyperBus interface was first released in 2014, and a growing number of chipset vendors are adopting HyperBus high-performance solutions in their next generation products. Publicly announced processors supporting the HyperBus interface include Freescale's MAC57D5xx Automotive DIS MCU, Cypress's FM4 S6E2DH General purpose MCU, and Cypress's Traveo™ S6J324C and S6J326C Automotive MCUS. Cypress is working closely with many processor companies, and dozens of platforms are being developed to support HyperBus interfaces.
