Cypress introduces the first dual-port USB-C controller with Thunderbolt™ support
Cypress Semiconductor, a leader in the USB-C market, announced a new USB-C controller optimized for power transfer (PD) for Thunderbolt™ notebook, desktop and docking applications. The EZ-PD™ CCG5 is the industry's first dual-port USB-C controller to support the Thunderbolt alternate mode feature of Intel Thunderbolt 3 (Alpine Ridge) controller.
The EZ-PD CCG5 solution improves the USB-C plug and play experience and reduces the number of external components required through built-in anti-short circuit, anti-static discharge and other features. This highly integrated controller enhances system stability by integrating flash memory, which can store two firmware images for secure boot. The controller also features the EZ-PD family's signature programmable features to adapt to changing industry standards.
Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of Wired Connectivity at Cypress, said: "The USB-C standard offers advantages in providing customers with universal connectivity and fast charging, and the maturity of its controllers has been closely watched by the world's leading PC manufacturers. Cypress's new EZ-PD CCG5 controller is optimized to make USB-C ubiquitous in desktops, laptops and docking stations, and several top PC manufacturers have incorporated it into their product designs."
The single-chip EZ-PD CCG5 solution integrates a 20V regulator, sideband (SBU) multiplexer, USB High Speed (HS) multiplexer, gate driver for high voltage power FETs, configuration channel (CC) and VBUS on SBU pins Short-circuit protection, dedicated hardware for overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent protection, and system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection minimize material costs for dual USB-C ports.
As the USB Type-C standard continues to evolve, compatibility and interoperability will be a constant challenge, and Cypress's programmable EZ-PD controller can be upgraded with firmware to adapt to changes and overcome interoperability issues. It also integrates ARM® Cortex® -M0 and 128KB Flash for simultaneous read and write when firmware is upgraded.
