ON Semiconducto announces a new 1/3.2-inch, 4-megapixel (MP) backlit (BSI)CMOS digital image sensor. The AR0430 image sensor has a rate of 120 frames per second and supports slow motion video in 4MP mode. The built-in functionality of the device enables users to obtain both color and depth images from a single image sensor, which would normally require a separate sensor that provides depth mapping.

The AR0430 image sensor has a rate of 120 frames per second and supports slow motion video in 4MP mode. The built-in functionality of the device enables users to obtain both color and depth images from a single image sensor, which would normally require a separate sensor that provides depth mapping.

     The AR0430 is the ideal image sensor for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including wearables, ARVR products and other application designs, including visual doorbells and security cameras. The innovative design and functionality of the AR0430 image sensor won the 2018CES Innovation Award in the Embedded Technology category.

     ON Semiconductor's Super Depth technology enables synchronous video and depth mapping. The sensor's built-in technology, color filter array (CFA) and microlens produce a data stream containing image and depth information. This data is algorithmic and integrated to provide 30fps video streams and depth images of any object within one meter of the camera, enabling features such as controlling smart IoT devices with gesture analysis and building simple 3D models in ARVR.

     The AR0430 image sensor has an active pixel array of 2316(H)x1746(V), providing a 4:3 aspect ratio. Its low energy performance requires only 125 milliwatts (mW) to run 4MP, 30fps data streams; In low power monitoring mode, energy consumption is reduced to 8mW - which is particularly important in battery-powered applications. In standard imaging mode, in both day and night light conditions, the CMOS sensor delivers high-quality images, improving its applicability in security cameras.

     Designers will benefit from the AR0430's excellent, flexible configuration, including program gain, horizontal and vertical blanking, frame size/rate, exposure, image flipping, window size, image panning, and more. Other product features include an electronic roller-shutter shutter, peripheral mechanical shutter support, an on-chip compensated temperature sensor, and three bare-crystal phase-locked loops (PLL) for ultra-low noise performance.

     GianlucaColli, vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Consumer Solutions division, said: "The AR0430 delivers excellent imaging performance in all lighting conditions, as well as excellent natural dynamic range to deliver clear images even in dark environments. But what makes it really stand out is the synchronous depth mapping capability, which is unprecedented in a single sensor solution. This, combined with low power consumption, opens up a number of IoT interaction and ARVR applications. Now, our customers can use only one camera to achieve an application that would otherwise require two cameras, saving design, cost, implementation and other issues with two cameras. We are honored to receive the 2018CES Innovation Award for this unique technology."
