ST offers new STM32L4 microcontrollers with integrated digital filters, expanding the development ecosystem

     STMicroelectronics introduces the STM32L45x ultra-low power microcontroller (MCU). The new microcontroller comes with a development ecosystem based on the easy-to-use, affordable STM32Cube platform. The STM32L451, STM32L452, and STM32L462 product lines integrate Sigma-Delta modulators (DFSDM) with digital filters to enable advanced audio functions, such as noise suppression or sound localization, on an affordable microcontroller. Up to 512 KB of on-chip flash memory and 160 KB of SRAM provide ample storage space for code and data.

     The new family of microcontrollers also integrates true random number generators, making it easier to develop security-focused applications such as connected smart devices. The STM32L462 also further enhances security device development support by integrating a hardware AES-256 encryption algorithm accelerator. Additional features include intelligent analog peripherals such as a 12-bit 5Msample/s ADC, internal voltage reference circuits and ultra-low power comparators, as well as multiple timers, a motor control channel, a temperature sensor and a capacitance-sensitive interface. The STM32L452 also offers a USB2.0 controller that requires no external crystals.

     The development ecosystem includes the STM32CubeMX initialization code generator and the STM32CubeL4 package, with components including middleware, Nucleo-64 board level Support Package (BSP), Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), and underlying API(LLAPI). The STM32CubeMX has a low-power design aid Power calculation wizard, as well as a clock signal management wizard and a pin assignment wizard.

     Nucleo-64 development board NUCLEO-L452RE provides users with an affordable, configurable and flexible development method for experimenting with new ideas and developing product prototypes, integrating ST-LINK/V2 probe-free debugger/programmer with Arduino® compatible pin expansion-on-board functionality.

     In addition to providing features that other ultra-low power microcontrollers do not have, the STM32L4 new series of microcontrollers also offers excellent processing performance and excellent energy efficiency, with 273 EEMBC CoreMark test scores better than other ultra-low power processor cores, and 245 ULPBench test scores. Proven to be more energy efficient than other brands of microcontrollers. Operating with a current of only 36µA/MHz, it can extend the life of small batteries and expand the application range to zero-energy products using environmental energy.
