Bosch launches ultra-low power accelerometers for wearables and the Internet of Things industry

Bosch Sensortec has introduced the BMA400, an ultra-low-power acceleration sensor for wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The BMA400 consumes one-tenth of the power of existing accelerometers and provides stable, high-performance service. Its dramatically reduced power requirements significantly improve battery life, especially for devices powered by button batteries.

Ultra-low power consumption combined with high performance

In general, the design of accelerometers must make a trade-off between low energy consumption and high performance. Now, the BMA400 gives you the best of both worlds: its combination of low power consumption, high performance and advanced features is unmatched by any other device on the market today - to the point of being out of reach.

Through continuous measurement, the sensor's high-quality measurement signal has been precisely defined to its cutoff frequency, which gives it excellent vibration resistance. The BMA400 can distinguish between real alarms in cases such as broken glass and false alarms caused by random vibrations, making it useful in iot use cases such as home smart security systems. As a result, the sensor can effectively prevent false alarms triggered by external environmental vibrations, such as construction work.

Smart power management system for battery-powered devices

With its step-counter's ultra-low power consumption of only 4μA, and its smart power management features such as built-in activity recognition, the BMA400 offers unprecedented battery life for wearable devices such as fitness bands, smart clothing, watches and activity trackers.

To further extend battery life, the BMA400 wakes up automatically only when movement is detected and automatically returns to sleep mode when movement stops. This feature is particularly suitable for ultra-low power iot applications powered by button batteries, i.e. smart door and window sensors used in indoor environmental control or smart security systems.

With a size of only 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.95mm and a plug-and-play step counter, the new BMA400 acceleration sensor is easily integrated into a variety of applications. This not only reduces time to market, but also makes it easier to add step-counting capabilities to new wearable devices, such as ordinary watches and jewelry, giving new products a head start.
