Bourns Introduces New Series of Air Coil Inductors

     A new series of air coil inductors introduced by Bourns features a high Q, a high self-resonant frequency, and a strict inductance tolerance. The AC4842R Air Coil Inductor Series from Bourns provides a low-loss, high-frequency solution that expands the selection of high-Q options available to RF application designers.

     With an inductance ranging from 22 to 150 nanohenry (nH) and a minimum Q value of 100, these new air coil inductors are ideal for high-frequency TV and radio receivers, transmitters, RF amplifiers, and tuning applications of the present day.

     When an electric current flows through an air coil inductor, energy is stored and released in the form of a magnetic field. Air coil inductors employ air as their core material, differing from alternatives like ferrite core inductors in a number of ways, including low core losses and minimum saturation. Their adaptability makes them useful in a wide variety of electrical circuits for tasks including signal filtering, impedance matching, and frequency tuning.

     The absence of a magnetic core in the wire coil design of the series results in notably reduced inductance values and enhanced performance at high frequencies. The Model AC4842R Series was developed by Bourns with a high degree of precision, including a DC resistance range of 4 to 33 milliohms, a maximum rated current of 1.2 to 3.50 A, and an operating temperature range of –25°C to +125°C. In addition to being manufactured with an epoxy cover for increased mechanical stability, the air coil inductors in the Model AC4842R Series are optimal for pick and place processes due to their surface mount design.
