NXP introduces Switching mode power controller
NXP Semiconductors announces the GreenChip™ SPR TEA1716 Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Controller IC - the industry's first PFC and LLC resonant combination controller for ultra-low standby power consumption at low loads. It also meets the requirements of the EU Ecodesign Directive, which will come into force in 2013. The company also announced the launch of a number of cost-effective SPF (flyback Smart Power) ics in ultra-small packages, including the GreenChip SPF TEA1731 and the new TEA172x series, which offer excellent no-load performance. In addition, NXP introduced a new GreenChip synchronous rectification (SR) control IC, the TEA1792.
Building on NXP's leadership in energy-efficient AC/DC power adapters for laptops, the new GreenChip IC family enables the design of widely used chargers, adapters and other power supplies into compact, ultra-thin products. These applications include mobile communication devices (such as smartphones and multimedia tablets), portable computer devices (such as e-book readers, audio/video players, netbooks, Ultrabooks™ laptops and computer peripherals), white goods (such as washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers and induction cookers), and applications for smart lighting, smart meters, HVAC, and air conditioning. Home and building automation control of industrial and residential systems.

The current state of global energy scarcity also requires us to abandon the 'always on' approach. "NXP's new GreenChip SPR TEA1716 provides industry-leading reductions in low-load standby power consumption to 0.5W and below, and we are now beginning to offer samples to key customers that will help them develop power adapters that meet the new EuP Lot 6 requirements."
Breakthrough in efficiency at low loads
The GreenChip SPR TEA1716 is a combined power factor correction (PFC) and LLC resonant converter that features an energy-efficient operating mode that will help designers meet and exceed extremely stringent no-load and low-load standby power requirements. Designed specifically for 90W to 500W power supplies, the Smart Power Resonant (SPR) controller TEA1716 integrates a PFC and resonant half-bridge controller (HBC) in the SO24 package. With less than 150 mW of no-load power consumption and an average efficiency 91% higher than general-purpose power supplies, the TEA1716 sets a new standard for standby efficiency and is the only combined controller on the market today that consumes much less than 0.5W of standby power at a load of approximately 250 mW. Fully comply with the requirements of the EU Energy Consuming Products Directive (EuP) Lot 6.
Similarly, the new GreenChip SPF TEA1731 6-pin flyback converter has the best no-load chip power consumption, with an energy-saving mode that allows the adapter to consume less than 100mW of no-load power. In energy saving mode, the TEA1731 also enables the input power of the power supply at a 0.25W load to be below the level of 0.5W (for example to power a standby system), while complying with the requirements of EuP Lot 6.
Help low cost, micro power supply design
The TEA1731 is one of a number of new GreenChip smart power fly-back ics from NXP, featuring a high degree of integration that effectively reduces the number of external devices required, and offers an ultra-small package that enables the miniaturization of the power adapter, thereby reducing the total material cost. These cost-effective GreenChip SPF ics also have complete protection features to maximize reliability, including:
● The GreenChip SPF TEA172x series is a highly integrated flyback regulator designed specifically for systems up to 15 W with 230 VAC power input and standby power consumption below 10mW. The TEA172x series comes in a compact SO7 package with a high voltage isolation band, integrated power MOSFET and output voltage primary side detection, which automatically reduces current consumption even when the charger is plugged in, even when the device needs to be charged. The TEA1721 (up to 5 W), TEA1722 (up to 8 W) and TEA1723 (up to 11 W) also have built-in energy saving control modes to maximize efficiency and are fully compatible with the USB1.1 and USB1.2 battery charging specifications. It can provide constant voltage (5V) and constant current at maximum load.
● GreenChip SPF TEA1731 is a flyback converter in an ultra-small TSOP6 package designed for low-cost, compact power supplies for 10 to 70W systems. With a very low IC operating current and switching frequency efficiency optimization mode, the controller can achieve an average efficiency of 90% for low-cost power supplies while achieving optimal no-load standby performance.
NXP's new GreenChip TEA1792 is a 6-pin synchronous rectifier controller with a powerful drive capability that enables various brands of SR MOSFETs to operate at the lowest RDS(on). The TEA1792 SR control IC is packaged in TSOP6 and requires only a small number of external components, which can significantly reduce the PCB area of the synchronous rectification part. Combined with the GreenChip TEA1792 and NXP Power SR MOSFETs in an LFPAK package with automotive grade strength, high power density can be achieved in ultra-small charger designs. Other NXP power MOSFETs available in packages include the TO220, I2PAK and D2PAK.
