NXP introduces the smallest 8-bit S08 microcontroller for the general purpose market

     NXP Semiconductor announced the launch of its smallest 8-bit S08 microcontroller (MCU) - the MC9S08PA4AVDC microcontroller. With a new package and a size of only 3 x 3 x 0.9 mm, this product can help overcome the technical challenges of shrinking PCB space for future technologies without increasing BOM costs. The MC9S08PA4AVDC can be used in a variety of size-constrained applications that require the use of micro-MCUs, such as industrial control, BLDC motor control, and Internet of Things (IoT) control.

     The introduction of the MC9S08PA4AVDC MCU enriches NXP's low-cost, high-performance HCS08 series 8-bit microcontroller lineup. The new MCU uses an enhanced HCS08 central processing unit and is available in a variety of peripherals, memory capacities and product types. With an 8-bit S08 core, the MC9S08PA4AVDC MCU operates at bus frequencies up to 20 MHz over the full temperature range (operating voltage range 2.7V to 5.5V), providing increased durability, flexibility and reliability in demanding industrial and user interface environments. In addition, the MCU integrates up to 4KB of flash memory, 128-byte EEPROM, and 512-byte RAM all in a single chip.

     CodeWarrior is available as an independent development tool (IDE) for NXP's S08 microcontrollers, including the latest MC9S08PA4AVDC, and the MC9S08PT60 Tower System (TWR) is a low-cost, standalone demo board designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the MC9S08P family. It comes with pre-installed demo programs, enabling rapid and cost-effective product evaluation and application development.

     NXP is continuing to expand the 8-bit MCU market, and the timely introduction of this product in a new micro-package is bound to help customers save system size and BOM costs as they develop new solutions.
