STMicroelectronics introduces a three-phase motor driver with integrated 500V power supply stage and ready-to-use evaluation board

     STMicroelectronics has introduced the PWD5T60 three-phase driver with a ready-to-use evaluation board for a variety of control schemes. This will speed up the creation of compact and reliable fans and pumps utilizing energy-efficient motors.

     Designed for applications up to 500V, the PWD5T60 integrates a gate driver and six power MOSFETs with an RDS(ON) of 1.38Ω for an excellent energy-area ratio. Zero-drop lead diodes are integrated, require some external components to complete the circuit, and use only 30% of the board footprint compared to drivers built with discrete components. The propagation delays of the high-side and low-side MOSFETs are closely aligned, which eliminates period distortion and optimizes the flexibility to establish operating frequencies, resulting in enhanced response and energy efficiency.

     The EVLPWD-FAN-PUMP evaluation board, introduced at the same time, enables developers to quickly evaluate the benefits of the drive in projects up to 100W. The board integrates the PWD5T60 with the STM32G0 microcontroller (MCU) capable of performing field oriented control (FOC) or 6-step control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (pmms) and brushless direct current (BLDC) motors. The board is suitable for fans and pumps, has adjustable single or three-way induction, and takes advantage of the PWD5T60's highly functional integration for a compact circular design. The board includes a power supply stage that generates 12V and 3.3V supply voltages for the application and provides a comprehensive AC line filter at the input.

     The EVLPWD-FAN-PUMP board enhances the PWD5T60's safety design with on-board bus voltage detection, providing undervoltage lock (UVLO) for each startup section to avoid operating under hazardous or inefficient conditions. The PWD5T60 is designed for durability and provides fail-safe protection against penetration currents by interlocking and pre-programmed default dead time to prevent cross conduction. In addition, excellent underground resilience guarantees impeccable functionality.

     The PWD5T60 uses an intelligent shutdown mechanism and a comparator for fast overcurrent protection. During fault detection, the output is immediately deactivated, and subsequent output deactivation cycles are configured by connecting the capacitor and an optional pull-up resistor to the specified pin. These components keep the shutdown response unchanged, enabling product developers to optimize the time frame to allow for fault clearance while always providing immediate shutdown. The driver can accommodate a wide input power supply voltage range of 9V to 20V for enhanced versatility, while CMOS/ TTL-compatible logic inputs are as low as 3.3V for easy interface with the main controller.
