STMicroelectronics introduces the world's first dual-core gyroscope

     STMicroelectronics launched the world's first dual-core gyroscope L3G4IS that can simultaneously handle the two functions of user action recognition and camera image stabilization. The innovative system architecture allows equipment manufacturers to perform two different functions with only one gyroscope. To optimize the size, system complexity and cost of smart consumer electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

     The innovative design of the dual-core gyroscope L3G4IS is integrated into two separate output channels optimized for different functions in a 4x4x1 mm package, while handling motion gesture recognition and optical image stabilization to achieve sharper and sharper picture quality for mobile cameras.

     Benedetto Vigna, Vice President and General Manager of Analog Products, MEMS and Sensor Products at STMicroelectronics, said: "With the innovative system architecture of ST's new dual-core gyroscope, device manufacturers can simply integrate a single gyroscope to achieve motion recognition and image stabilization without the need for two dedicated sensors with different technical specifications, resulting in more reliable performance, a slimmer, sleeker design and lower manufacturing costs for the end product."

     Designed to address power constraints in battery-powered portable devices, STMicroelectronics' new gyroscope L3G4IS integrates two power-saving modes, shutdown and sleep, and includes a first-in, first-out (FIFO) storage module for advanced intelligent power management. The new sensor outputs data through two separate communication interfaces, I2C and SPI, and also offers several digital embedded features such as configurable low-pass/high-pass filters. The new gyroscope has a built-in temperature sensor and a supply voltage range of 2.4V to 3.6V.
