The robust ±60V RS485 transceiver enhances the PROFIBUS-DP network
Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC2876 and LTC2877 RS485 transceivers that are exceptionally robust and can withstand high voltages for PROFIBUS-DP (Distributed Peripherals) master and controlled devices. As with any fieldbus, PROFIBUS-DP systems are prone to installation string failures, ground voltage failures, or surges that can cause catastrophic overvoltages that exceed the absolute maximum rating of a typical transceiver. The LTC2876 and LTC2877 can withstand ±60V on their bus pins regardless of whether they are in transmit, receive, standby or power off state, eliminating common damage caused by transmission line failures.
The LTC2876 and LTC2877 offer a wide range of protection levels, making them suitable for many PROFIBUS-DP applications, including discrete manufacturing and process automation. The extended input common model range of ±25V and comprehensive fail-safe operation improve data communication reliability in electrically noisy environments and in the presence of ground loop voltage, which would otherwise lead to data errors and the potential for device damage.
The device's very high ESD protection rating ensures that the LTC2876 and LTC2877 can withstand ±52kV HBM on the transceiver pin without locking or damage. ESD protection ratings up to ±15kV HBM are provided on all other pins. Fully symmetrical receiver thresholds ensure that these devices maintain good duty cycle symmetry (at low signal levels) and improve receiver noise resistance, while supporting full fail-safe operation. Both devices were tested with PROFIBUS IEC 61158-2 and TIA/EIA-485-A (RS485) loads to ensure compatibility with both standards.
The LTC2876 and LTC2877 are available in commercial, industrial, and automotive versions that support operating temperature ranges from 0°C to 70°C, from -40 °C to 85°C, and from -40 °C to 125°C, respectively. The LTC2876 comes in a RoHS-compliant 8-pin 3mm x 3mm DFN or MSOP package, while the LTC2877 includes a logic power supply and comes in a RoHS-compliant 10-pin 3mm x 3mm DFN or MSOP package.
